FlyLady.
Ever heard of her…?
Didn’t think so. I know I hadn’t until this past December. Ruben presented me with her neon pink book with a triumphant look on his face. “This is your Christmas present!” he announced.
I know he was waiting for a reaction of disgust from yours truly. Not because of the neon pink book screaming in my face. Mind you, it wasn’t too long ago when I prided myself in not allowing anything TOO pink into my house. But our baby Carmela has certainly changed that!
No, Ruben was waiting for me to react to a book titled, “Sink Reflections; Overwhelmed? Disorganized? Living In Chaos? FlyLady’s System Will Show You How to Get Your Home and Your Life In Order…”
Talk about a “Christmas present”!
But Instead of disgust, I was genuinely curious.
What woman would allow such a brazenly cheesy book cover to be printed with her name on it. What did Marla Cilley (aka FlyLady) have in mind when she wrote Sink Reflections?
Apparently this former hoarder/slob woke up one morning and had had enough of her situation. She researched, talked to people, and took action. She even created an online community for individuals looking to dig (quite literally) their way out of the chaos.
The ‘problem’ is that we are not hoarders. We’re not slobs either. Quite the opposite if you ask most of our family members.
And yet, mountains of clean laundry manage to take up residence in our living room for days.
Stuff sits on our countertops and book shelves for weeks. Admittedly, I was at my wits end. But there’s only so much a girl can do. You know, one with 4 kids and a husband/child.
Ruben noticed my frustration and realized something needed to change.
Enter FlyLady, and “shining your sink.”
For some inexplicable reason, when you shine your sink and intentionally clear it of everything and anything (including soap, sponges and dish pans), order seems to radiate from it. This was the only thing advice practiced for an entire week.
Every night before going to sleep, we clear and shine our sink. Almost like magic, the house seemed to stay less chaotic and more harmonious just by applying the shiny sink rule.
I don’t know why.
Slowly we’re introducing more of FlyLady’s concepts, from bedtime routines to laundry routines. And they’re working! I even find that I am encountered will small spurts of free time! Yes, the mother of 4 children is finding free time! How else do you think I found time to write our family update!
Thank you FlyLady.
And Thank You hubby for my unexpected Christmas gift!
